The Noumea Courthouse relies on the AERO Bench

08.06.2021 | Palace of Justice

Formerly known as Port-de-France, Noumea is the capital of New Caledonia, a French overseas territory. With nearly 100,000 inhabitants (200,000 including the metropolitan area), it is the most populous town in the archipelago and the largest French-speaking city in the Pacific Ocean.

Noumea is characterised by its strong centrality, which is its extensive urban centre. This historical and harbour heart of great attractiveness and economic vitality radiates beyond the municipal borders, offering at the same time a quality of life on a human scale.

The city of the 5 Courthouses

Throughout the history of the city and following the evolution of the topography with areas recovered from the sea and the reclamation of muddy areas and mangrove swamps, there have been 5 different courthouses.

The first of them was built in 1860 and used wood as the main material. The fifth and current one was built in 1960 and expanded in 2005. The courtroom has recently been renovated and 400m² of photovoltaic panels have been installed on the roof of the Court of First Instance.

It is precisely in this courtroom where the self-standing AERO Bench of 3, 4 and 5 seats, designed by Lievore Altherr Molina for Sellex, is located. A total of 22 benches have been installed with capacity for almost 100 people, distributed in the area of the accused, the public and the civil party.

This is not the first time that AERO Bench has equipped Palaces of Justice and Courts. The Palace of Justice of Pointe-à-Pitre (France) or the Court of Mahón (Spain) are other examples. For Sellex it is an honour to bring the elegance, durability and comfort of the AERO Bench to this type of installations.
