HANDY Stool brings flexibility to the Science Museum of Milan

Located in the old San Vittore al Corpo monastery in Milan and restored by the architect Piero Portaluppi between 1947 and 1953, the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology is the largest scientific-technical museum in Italy. Its 40,000 m2 contain the world's largest collection of machine models based on the Renaissance sage.

The museum also has permanent exhibitions on the most diverse topics, such as telecommunications, particle physics or space, among others. To all this are added the 14 interactive laboratories (iLab) aimed mainly at children. It is precisely in one of them, called iLab Chemistry, where the HANDY Stool designed by Stephen Philips (Arup) is present.

A stool that encourages collaborative work

Ales Bonaccorsi, the Creative Director of the museum, says that 'flexibility' in the layout of the interactive lab space is essential, so they generally design all their furniture accordingly. 'Designing seatings is too complex due to certifications required and time production, so we had to look in the market ', Bonaccorsi concedes. 'Luckily we came across your perfect product,'he admits.

The HANDY Stool stands out for being a stackable and lightweight seat. Both features were highly valued by the museum managers because when the activities are finished, the stools can be quickly picked up and 'clear the space' in an easy way. The interactive laboratories, moreover, encourage collaborative work among children, so it is necessary that the seats can be 'constantly moved'.

Bonaccorsi adds that the 'interior capacity for bags and backpacks was also a plus, because even though our labs usually feature a storage for those items, someone might want to keep their belongings in the proximity'. Finally, HANDY is made of polypropylene, a material that is easy to clean and maintain, which is 'another positive feature due to the everyday use and the high number of users'.
