University of Minnesota students eat sitting on the SLAM Chair

21.09.2020 | Education

The University of Minnesota (Minnesota State University), in Mankato (United States), equips the spacious facilities of its residential dining room with the SLAM Chair, designed by Lievore Altherr Molina for Sellex.

The versions chosen are the Basic Chair with American oak 3D wood shell, the Basic Chair with grey polypropylene shell and the H76 cm high Chair. In total, there are about 800 high and low hospitality seats that Minnesota State University students use each day to eat.

A very successful choice since the SLAM family allows equipping all types of facilities while maintaining a common aesthetic. In the case of the High Chair, it should be noted that it is a version widely used in hospitality and restaurant environments as it offers the functionalities of a high stool, but providing greater comfort.

Sustainable space

The dining room, a collaboration between Bentz / Thompson / Rietow and Ayers St. Gross Architects, is presented as a lively and bright room, thanks to its large windows, offering students extensive views of the campus.

Energy efficiency is another aspect that was considered in the project in compliance with the Minnesota Sustainable Construction Guidelines. The building's sustainability features include food waste composting, LED lighting, and the use of heat recovery technology.

But what really stands out about this dining room are its cylindrical curved maple wood walls, an element for which it received the Award for Excellence in Construction 2017. The design was carried out by Ayers St. Gross Architects; the wood panel grating for the curved wall was made by Rulon International, and the installation was done by Twin City Acoustics.
