Wood as a language in the Runnymede College library

28.04.2026 | Education

The new library at Runnymede College, a British school located in Alcobendas (Spain), is conceived as a space where architecture and materiality shape a reading and learning experience deeply connected to its surroundings.

In this project, wood is not merely a construction resource, but the element that defines the identity of the building.

Designed by Rojo/Fernández-Shaw Architects, the library is structured around a laminated timber framework that unfolds into columns and beams, forming a continuous lattice. This structure, reminiscent of a basket or a nest, envelops and organises the space, creating an open and flexible volume rich in nuance. Within this context, Sellex furniture integrates naturally into the whole, accompanying a project where wood speaks for itself.

Recognition for timber architecture

The project has been awarded the AMAD 2024 Prize in the New Build category, recognising architectural, refurbishment and interior design proposals for their innovative use of wood as a natural and sustainable material.

The jury particularly valued “the elegance and simplicity of the proposal, which extends from the overall volume of the building down to its smallest construction details”, highlighting how the building “fits perfectly into its surroundings while at the same time standing out and engaging in dialogue with them”.

This recognition reinforces the role of wood not only as a construction solution, but as a tool for developing contemporary, responsible architecture that is connected to its context.

SLAM: lightness and functionality for a constantly evolving space

Inside the library, our SLAM Chair is incorporated as an essential element of the reading space. A total of 132 chairs have been installed in the Sled version, with a chromed frame and polypropylene shell in various tones: white, blue and moss green.

The choice of SLAM as seating for educational environments responds to both functional and formal criteria. As architect Luis Rojo, from Rojo/Fernández-Shaw Architects, explains: “There are several reasons why we chose the SLAM Chair. The first is that it is very comfortable, as has already been demonstrated at Runnymede.” The studio had previously incorporated the SLAM Chair in other areas of the school, such as offices and multipurpose rooms, reinforcing the continuity of the project.

He also highlights its lightness and ease of use: the stacking system and its low weight allow spaces to be quickly reconfigured, something essential in a dynamic educational environment.

From a design perspective, Rojo notes that he particularly appreciates its chromed frame, as well as the shell, which together convey “balance and formal clarity”, in close harmony with the building’s architecture.

For her part, Begoña Fernández-Shaw, partner at the studio, also emphasises the importance of colour, which introduces nuance and dynamism into a space dominated by the materiality of wood.

It is a pleasure for us that Runnymede College and Rojo/Fernández-Shaw Architects have once again placed their trust in Sellex, consolidating a collaboration based on coherence between architecture, material and furniture.
