AERO as waiting seating at the STC Interchange

24.03.2026 | Terminals

The new Riyadh Metro system, one of the most ambitious urban transport projects in the world, marks a milestone in the transformation of the Saudi capital.

Inaugurated in 2025, the six-line network connects key points of the city, such as King Khalid International Airport and the King Abdullah Financial District, and is designed to carry more than 3.6 million passengers per day.

Within this strategic infrastructure, Sellex contributes to the STC Interchange, equipped with the AERO Bench, one of our most internationally recognised passenger terminal seating systems, specifically conceived for high-traffic public spaces such as airports and railway, metro or bus stations.

In total, 20 Wall Hanging AERO Benches (373 cm long, with 6 seats) have been installed in the metro area, along with 24 Selfstanding AERO Benches (125 cm long, with 2 seats) in the bus station, providing resting solutions that integrate naturally into a large-scale environment.

An iconic station for a new urban mobility

STC Station is one of the four signature stations of the Riyadh Metro, commissioned from internationally renowned architectural practices. The project was designed by the German studio Gerber Architekten, winner of the competition held in 2012.

The architectural design is inspired by the striking rock formations of the steep slopes around Riyadh. The station looks like a floating rock slab detached from the ground and adds a striking accent to the dense urban fabric.

The building descends up to 30 metres underground and organises the crossing of two metro lines within an open space that is easily legible for passengers. Large light wells allow natural daylight to reach the lower levels, creating a bright atmosphere and facilitating orientation within the station.

The project not only resolves the technical complexity of a major underground interchange but also introduces new public spaces at surface level. The station’s roof has been transformed into a park providing green areas and meeting spaces.

AERO: lightness and functionality for transit spaces

The AERO Bench was selected to equip the interchange’s waiting areas. On the metro platforms, Wall Hanging AERO Benches have been installed — a solution that creates a lighter visual appearance while facilitating floor cleaning, an especially important aspect in spaces with a constant flow of passengers.

In the bus station, Selfstanding AERO Benches allow flexible placement within the space while maintaining the same formal clarity and visual lightness that characterise the design.

The metal structure and refined geometry of the AERO Bench contribute to a discreet yet recognisable piece of furniture, capable of integrating into large-scale facilities without losing its identity.

Its presence at the STC Interchange reinforces the qualities of this design, conceived to meet the demands of airports, stations and terminals around the world, where durability, design and functionality are essential.
