The Theatre De Harmonie in Leeuwarden is an important cultural and entertainment centre in the heart of the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. Far from being just a theatre, De Harmonie has become the central meeting place for the arts, a place that promises an unforgettable experience for anyone who wants to experience Dutch culture.
If there is one thing it stands out for, it is its modern architecture, the work of Frits van Dongen who was in charge of the design of the building in 1994. It was his vision that made the transformation of the theatre possible, turning it into a masterpiece that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal. It is a highly versatile theatre that can host all kinds of events, from intimate theatrical pieces to grand operas, congresses and conferences.
But even though it is a masterful building, the Theatre De Harmonie needed a new interior layout, which the Dutch architectural studio BURO M2R took care of. It is here that the furniture by Sellex becomes part of a project that we fell in love with from the very first moment.
Aquatic inspiration
The Theatre De Harmonie in Leeuwarden stands out for its architectural design inspired by the aquatic environments of Friesland. Architect Frits van Dongen conceived the building with references to sailing and water, elements intrinsic to the region. The external structure of the theatre evokes the shape of a ship, integrating harmoniously with the surrounding waterscape. The iconic building is located on the edge of the old town, next to Leeuwarden's ‘Stadsgracht’, that is, next to the ‘city canal’ or ‘city moat’.
The same is true for the interior, where the aquatic theme manifests itself in various details. The main foyer features golden columns whose reflection is reminiscent of the sun shining on water. In addition, the majestic staircases of the theatre evoke those of the Opéra Garnier in Paris, suggesting a connection to the fluidity and elegance of movement in water.
These design features not only pay homage to the aquatic environment of Friesland, but also enrich the cultural experience of visitors, immersing them in an atmosphere that celebrates the identity and heritage of the region. This is why the BURO M2R team has renovated the interior of the building while maintaining this aquatic essence and reinforcing it inside.
Proof of this is, for example, the way in which the cafeteria has been separated from the main hall, incorporating a structure that evokes the prow of a ship. Likewise, the design of the floor imitates the ripples of water and extends to the outdoor terrace.
Diversity and dynamism
The flexibility of the furniture was key to the interior design. Martijn Sorée of BURO M2R Architects says so. It was essential to have furniture that could be adapted to the needs of the space. For this, stackable and mobile furniture was chosen, making it easy to rearrange and optimise the area.
The selection of Sellex chairs responded to the aesthetic and functional versatility they were looking for. Models such as the NEST Chair, the SLAM Chair and the MASS High Chair can be combined with each other without losing coherence in design and colour (musgo, blue and camel), bringing dynamism and diversity to the environment without compromising the visual harmony of the theatre.
Thanks to the combination of different levels of seating, wood, plants and warm tones, we have managed to create a cosy atmosphere that we love.
